Summary:

The study is based on one district of West Bengal, for the problems connected with girls’ school participation and performance differ from region to region, and between different groups of people, especially in a vast country like India. It was therefore necessary to identify problems in an area specific way, so that appropriate intervention programmes may be initiated. In particular, the determinants of school enrolment, grade attainment and school dropout in selected areas of West Bengal have been examined.
