The survival of natural fish stocks depend largely on our present day exploitation policies, plans and decisions. The need for cautious and prudent management of natural fish resources has become essential in view of the rising numbers and cases of depleted stocks and species that are threatened. Rebuilding fish stocks that are already in jeopardy remains the best way to resuscitate and maintain these critical and essential aquatic organism that our past and present actions and have left in degradable state.
Dr Kingsley Chukwu and Professor Suanu N Deekae are researchers and Lecturers in the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Environment at The Rivers State University Port Harcourt Nigeria, They specialize in Fisheries management and fish population dynamics. They have published several articles in this field over the years.
