Activated microglia cells produces pro-inflammatory cytokines and neurotoxic mediators like nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin (PG) E2, superoxide anion, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) which may stimulate brain lesion pathophysiology, produce neurotoxins and lead to the neuronal damage.
