Major portion of central Maharashtra is drought prone area. Water requirement for agricultural purpose cannot be fulfilled by the scanty rainfall. Although ground water can be used as alternative source for water supply. But due to continuous extraction of groundwater through wells, it have lowered the ground water table in this region. To improve this condition, it is necessary to raise the ground water table through artificial means. But the rise in the water table level is entirely dependent upon water bearing characteristics of the rocks occurring in the region. Therefore, to determine the geological conditions that has helped watershed development activities are described in this context. Watershed management is also important for water as well as soil conservation in the watershed region.
Prof. Piyush K. Bhandari has completed his graduation in Civil Engg. and post-graduation in Structures from SPPU, Pune. He is working as Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at D. V. V. P. College of Engineering, Ahmednagar with 10 years of experience in Teaching. His area of interest includes sustainable construction and watershed management.
